In an email sent to customers on Thursday night, TwinSpires stated that its online casino and sportsbook in Michigan will be shutting down on September 6th.

The brand’s online gambling arms will come to an end six months after the announcement of TwinSpires’ departure from the industry.

TwinSpires closing sportsbook and casino in Michigan

In February, TwinSpires made an initial announcement regarding the closure of its online casino and sportsbook. Subsequently, it declared that progressive jackpots would be discontinued starting from July 31.

Despite the closure, the TwinSpires horse racing website and app will remain operational.

TwinSpires’ performance in the Michigan market has been challenging, as it currently holds the 10th position among 15 operators in terms of overall online sportsbook handle. With a total of just over $27 million, it is evident that the app’s closure announcement did not come as a shock, considering its consistent last-place ranking over the past three months.

TwinSpires, with a total revenue of $15.3 million, currently holds the 13th position among Michigan’s online casinos. Over the past six months, it has consistently ranked within the bottom two, reaching a low of less than $400,000 in July.

Cashing out of TwinSpires app

TwinSpires representatives have informed customers via email that casino games will be deactivated and starting from September 6th, sports wagers and casino games will no longer be accessible on the website. Deposits will be disabled as of August 30th. Customers will have until October 6th to withdraw funds from their accounts.

In addition, the email detailed the process for open bets.

  • Once the event is over, any outstanding bets will be resolved in the usual manner, and you can expect to receive a check within 30 days of the resolution.
  • As long as you have any ongoing bets, you will still have the option to Cash Out on all qualifying open bets.
  • You can also cancel any upcoming bets that will be settled after September 6, 2022 by contacting Player Services at 877-774-7371.

What new online casino and sportsbook will replace TwinSpires in Michigan?

The Hannahville Indian Community operates the Island Resort & Casino, which grants licenses to TwinSpires. The departure creates an opportunity for a different operator to step in and replace TwinSpires. The identity of the new operator has already been determined, although the official announcement will be made at a later time.

The Island Resort representative informed Playinmichigan that they do not have a specific launch date, but they intend to reveal their new partner in September.

Playinmichigan has engaged in speculation regarding potential replacements, with the latest consideration being SI Sportsbook. SI has formed a partnership with 888Sport, a renowned European brand that is currently operating in New Jersey. It is worth noting that 888 Atlantic Limited is a licensed supplier in Michigan.

At present, SI services can be accessed in the states of Virginia and Colorado.

During the busiest sports betting time of the year, the new Michigan brand has the potential to emerge as a refreshing presence in the market.
